Kick It Over Manifesto

We, the economics students of the world, make this accusation:

That you, the teachers of neoclassical economics and the students that you graduate, have perpetuated a gigantic fraud upon the world.

You claim to work in a pure science of formula and law, but yours is a social science, with all the fragility and uncertainty that this entails. We accuse you of pretending to be what you are not.

You hide in your offices, protected by your jargon, while in the real world forests vanish, species perish, human lives are ruined and lost. We accuse you of gross negligence in the management of our planetary household.

You have known since its inception that your measure of economic progress, the gross domestic product, is fundamentally flawed and incomplete, and yet you have allowed it to become a global standard, reported day by day in every form of media. We accuse you of recklessly supporting the illusion of progress at the expense of human and environmental health.

You have done great harm, but your time is coming to its close. The revolution of economics has begun, as hopeful and determined as any in our history. We will have our clash of paradigms, we will have our moment of truth, and out of each will come a new economics — open, holistic, human scale.

On campus after campus, we will chase you old goats out of power. Then, in the months and years that follow, we will begin the work of reprogramming the doomsday machine.

  3. Congratulations to Kick it over for your recent manifesto. We suggest, however, that you slightly expand the portion of your current statement which reads: “We accuse you of gross negligence in the management of our planetary household” with a few additional words that cause it to read “gross negligence, academic malfeasance – and deliberate deception – in the management of our planetary household.”

    In addition, economists mislead their demography students who they teach in their departments by offering no biological, biospheric, or environmental understandings whatsoever of our planet’s functioning life-support machinery (the only such machinery so far known to exist anywhere in the universe).

    The above omission can (and should) be corrected by immediately incorporating an easy two-week “Biospheric Literacy 101 – What Every Citizen Should Know About Our Planet” unit as a degree requirement for ALL first-year undergraduates -of every major. Freely-downloadable open-courseware resources for exactly such unit already exist and are entirely free for use by scientists, students, and universities anywhere in the world.     p.s. – Economics today is built upon a demographic population-growth Ponzi scheme in which ruling elites desire endlessly more and more people in order to provide endlessly more daily transaction fees, more accounts, more daily trades, endlessly more roads, more new malls, more condos, more subdivisions, more consumption, more loans, more purchases, and thus endlessly more profits for ruling elites. But the damages, impacts, and eradications of 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15.8 billion by the end of this century constitute the demographic and biospheric equivalent of a collision trajectory with a near-Earth object.

    I am SO glad to finally hear someone call for education to require a familiarity with the earth that sustains us and the systems that humans have superimposed on it. I believe basic biospheric, human and economic education should be a part of every student’s education, starting in elementary school. I feels so crazy (tragic, actually) that kids spend 12 years of their growing-up life learning so much irrelevant stuff that they forget as soon as they take their end-of-semester tests and yet they often don’t know the most basic things that are relevant to their lives and that of their fellow humans and other species, such as where their food comes from, where the electricity in their homes comes from, where the water comes from and the wastewater goes, what’s in the air they breathe and the chemical products they put on their bodies etc etc. No wonder we are destroying the planet – we have lost the connection to it.

    Seeing flaws in the common economic system is a very good thing. Congratulations!

    Of course that’s the easy part. Establishing a better system might not be so easy. Please take things one step at a time, with respect & humility.

  6. Its great to see we have a group that is questioning the status quo.Its needed desperately as the business/growth/ paradigm rules almost without criticism aided and promoted by the big end of town and the mainstream media.I hope it flourishes

  7. This was pretty interesting to read. Its also a very interesting perspective on what higher education is spitting out into the real world. The traditional education that generations have been accustomed to appears to now be deemed inadequate due to the struggling economy of the United States. One would feel that it should be time to go back to the basics and be taught about everything that surrounds us in our lives. Society, the environment, basic skills needed to live day to day. This artists belief appears to be one that states how higher education is causing everyone to be a detriment to our society. Now that higher education has been called out, what will be done to counter this highly emotional impression that is being left on us. Maybe its time to prepare young students to go out into the real world and prevent them for not falling for the same traps that have caused this country to have a downward spiraling economy…

  8. “The revolution of economics has begun”, what a powerful quote from this great piece. With unrelenting zeal the nominal socioeconomic platform is shattered. Every fact of this work speaks to the stigmatizes society creates to fulfill itself. It gives me great happiness to know there are people who would charge the facets of concreted ways of life. I myself have often wondered about this common misconception. Were people really ignorant to how the world worked. Endlessly fooled into thinking that the way things were done is the only way they can be done. Its the neoclassical fraud spun about whenever there is something to lose by those in power. Implored in all ways is how I find myself when diving my thoughts into this problem at hand but I digress. The stools of higher education can be seen readily in the streets. Even the old mill grows mute ebbing through the potpourris diathermy that is School.
